Have you ever looked over at someone and envied their seemingly peaceful life?

The solitude that comes with suffering often makes us feel as though we’re the only ones struggling. I realised this recently from the sixth floor of a hospital room. The view below showed people going about their day unaffected by the challenges my family and I face. This story is about the resilience we all share, a common thread many, particularly black men, can relate to and find strength in.

The Hospital Window Perspective

Life can abruptly interrupt our usual routines. In my case, it’s the frequent hospital visits with my daughter. She battles a condition that weakens her and fills our nights with stress and sleeplessness. My wife is equally strained with her own health challenges. When these challenges occur in tandem, it is often me left alone as the sole pillar standing — not just for our daughter but our entire family.

From our hospital room overlooking the streets of Southern France, it seemed like the world outside was moving forward without us. However, observing more closely, I saw that the city’s energy resembled a marathon. Everyone showed signs of exhaustion, joy, and determination — emotions that resonated with my own feelings. It was a stark reminder that each of us runs our own marathon, facing different challenges but ultimately seeking achievement and stability.

Longing for Normalcy

The yearning for a normal life, to enjoy simple pleasures without the shadow of illness, is powerful. This longing runs deep, especially for those of us sidelined by unexpected challenges. However, we all encounter obstacles along our paths, and sometimes, what seems easier for others is just as complex.

Trading Places

Consider for a moment if we could switch lives with someone we think is free from burdens. Would their hidden struggles seem easier once brought to light? Our true strength is not defined by the absence of hardship but by our courage to confront it head-on. This crossroad is all too familiar for us as black men dealing with life’s complexities.

Recognising that our battles are unique yet not solitary can be empowering. They connect us to a broader history of resilience, demonstrating the enduring strength passed down through generations. Sharing our stories builds a collective voice that brings comfort and solidarity.

A Call to Brotherhood

To my brothers experiencing their own difficult nights and their equivalent to longing looks from hospital windows, know that your strength does not go unnoticed. It’s there in every quiet night by a hospital bed, every silent prayer for health, and every effort to balance financial and mental well-being. Let’s draw strength from each other’s experiences, knowing that together, we form an unstoppable force capable of overcoming life’s marathons.

As we move forward, let’s take time to celebrate the small victories and cherish the moments of rest. It’s our responsibility to lend a hand to those beside us. Our stories are woven with challenges and triumphs that can uplift and inspire.

Ultimately, it’s not about wishing for a different life or a different set of challenges. It’s about embracing our journey, with all its ups and downs, and recognising the power within us to make each step count. Let’s continue to support each other. Together, we can cross any finish line that life presents.
